Grisman leans into his legacy, offering refreshing takes on a wide-ranging mix of songs from the Grateful Dead, Jerry Garcia, and, of course, Garcia/Grisman canons.
—Relix
The music that Sam Grisman’s father, the celebrated mandolinist David “Dawg” Grisman, and his close friend Jerry Garcia made in the early 1990s is not only some of the most timeless acoustic music ever recorded; it also triggers the younger Grisman’s oldest and fondest musical memories. What Grisman finds most inspiring about this material is the way his father and Garcia’s camaraderie and their love and joy for the music oozes out of each recording, whether they were originals, covers, or traditional and old-time tunes.
The goal of the Sam Grisman Project is to build a platform to showcase genuine passion and appreciation for the legacy of Grisman and Garcia’s music. By playing some of that duo’s beloved repertoire and sharing the group’s own original music, the Sam Grisman Project shows the impact that this music has had on its members’ musical voices.
